Ways to Stay Present with simple Mindfulness Exercises
Bringing Mindfulness into Everyday Life
Integrating mindfulness exercises in your daily routine it’s simple! Mindfulness isn’t something separate from life—it’s a way of moving through it with awareness. But in the rush of daily tasks, it’s easy to lose connection with the present moment.
Yoga and sailing have taught us that mindfulness doesn’t require extra time—it’s about paying attention to what’s already happening.
Here are five simple mindfulness exercises you can practice every day to feel more present and grounded. They are not just standard mindfulness exercises, but they are drawn from our direct experience in our daily life onboard our sailboat.
1. Begin the Day with a Breathing Exercise
Before checking your phone or thinking about the day ahead, take one intentional breath.
- Inhale deeply through your nose, feeling your chest and belly expand.
- Exhale slowly, noticing the air leaving your body.
This mindfulness exercise sets the tone for a day with more presence. On our yoga sailing retreats, we start each morning with breath awareness, surrounded by the calm of the sea.

2. Move with Awareness
Mindfulness isn’t just about sitting still—it’s also about moving with presence.
- In yoga, we focus on feeling each movement rather than just flowing through poses mechanically.
- On a sailboat, every movement requires awareness—tuning in to the wind, the balance of the boat, and the rhythm of the water.
Wherever you are, try this mindfulness exercise:
✅ Walk slowly, noticing the sensation of your feet touching the ground;
✅ Stretch with full awareness of how your muscles feel;
✅ Pay attention to small movements, whether you’re cooking, cleaning, or reaching for your morning coffee.
This simple shift grounds you in the present moment.

3. Listen to the Sounds Around You
One of the easiest mindfulness exercises is simply listening.
- Pause for a moment and notice the sounds around you.
- Don’t label or judge them—just observe.
- Let your mind rest in the experience of hearing.
At sea, this practice happens naturally—we listen to the wind in the sails, the water lapping against the boat, and the quiet hum of nature.
Try it now: Close your eyes and focus on the sounds around you for 30 seconds. Notice how it shifts your awareness.
4. Practice Single-Tasking
We live in a world of multitasking, but true mindfulness happens when we do one thing at a time.
This mindfulness exercise is simple:
- When you drink your coffee, just drink your coffee. Feel the warmth, taste the flavors, notice the sensations.
- When you eat, slow down. Chew mindfully, savoring each bite.
- When you walk, just walk. Pay attention to your steps, the air on your skin, and the movement of your body.
On a sailboat, this focus happens naturally—when adjusting the sails or navigating, your full attention is required. Bringing this same focus into small daily tasks can shift the way you experience life.
5. Let Go of Control and Embrace the Present
Both yoga and sailing teach us an important lesson: we are not always in control.
- The wind shifts.
- The sea changes.
- Your body feels different each day.
Instead of resisting change, this mindfulness exercise is about embracing what is.
- Notice when you’re trying to control an outcome.
- Pause and take a breath.
- Ask yourself: Can I simply be present with what is happening right now?
Let go of the need for things to be perfect—your breath, your practice, your thoughts—and just be here, now.

Mindfulness isn’t something extra to fit into your schedule—it’s about how you experience each moment.
On our yoga sailing retreats, we practice this naturally, through breath, movement, and connection to the sea. But these mindfulness exercises can be done anywhere, anytime.
